i'm not even going to jazzfest. i have neither tickets nor intentions. the 'jazzfest' i'm attending happens after the gates close and plays till dawn.
but i decided to work from home today. what i really wanted was to work from fairgrinds. except fairgrinds is literally a block away from the fairgrounds (hence the name), and the fairgrounds is where jazzfest happens. and that means no parking. and maybe no free tables at the coffeeshop.
i took a shower and put on a new thrift store dress, which is not really my 'style' because it's linen with a halter top and a handkerchief hem, bright yellow with red flowers embroidered at the waist. if you're not really getting a picture of it, i look like a mexican hippie. which means it's a great festival dress. except i'm not going to the festival.
but i'm in my festival dress, right next door to the festival, and i had to park a little ways down (but not bad at all) and walk past houses blaring new orleans music, and there was a man on the street with a baby and the baby waved at me. at the corner of n. lopez and ponce de leon, the early-bird festival crowd (gates don't open for an hour) is spilled onto the street in front of liuzza's, bloody marys in hand, bright funky dresses, hawaiian (or alligator) shirts, and straw hats all around.
inside fairgrinds it's only half-full, no more than usual, and it's dark and cool. they've got OZ turned up. as i'm toasting my everything bagel, this song comes on that we all know - i have no idea what the verse lyrics are, but the chorus is "oo oo oo, oo oo oo oo, oo oo" - and me and someone else are whistling along because that's how you sing this song. tapping my feet, i explain to the woman next to me, who is definitely going to the festival, how to retrieve her bagel from the complicated toaster.
the next time you're a block and a half from my house, you'd better come visit.
